Folks,

Given the issues with the mailing lists, I wanted to test this one.

Yeah, I think we first need to discuss the goals for the project. For
example: You'd formulated it as PostgreSQL Global Developers Network,
whereas I think the companies involved are interested in a KB primarily
for *users*. Not that those things are too far apart, but it needs
discussion before we drag in a bunch more volunteers.

Agreed. It's not really clear to me what PGDN would actually be. Is it =
the community developers? A coalition of commercial PostgreSQL-based =
businesses?

Can you be the motivator for getting this organized? I'm really 0 for

As Gevik mentioned, there's now a mailing list. Everyone please get on =
it ASAP.

I think it would be best to setup a phone call so there is consensus on =
what we're trying to accomplish here.

Here's what Josh Berkus sent out last week:
Personally, I'm picturing a combination of issue-based Q&A, How-To=20
articles and code snippets. Like MS Technet, only with How-To=20
articles and samples as well. A lot of the articles will be re-written=20
summaries of knowledge from bug reports, release notes, mailing lists=20
and blogs. Searchability will be paramount.

A second major area that I think should be fundamental to whatever we=20
use is translation management; that is, the system should manage=20
translating articles and information from one language to another,=20
including supporting the origination of articles in non-English =
languages.

In addition to that, I'll add that I think we need to get community =
involvement as well. One possible way is to offer incentives to authors =
of articles, possibly some kind of gift for every X articles, or =
offering monthly prizes for the most popular articles by vote, web =
traffic, what-have-you.

There's also been rumblings about putting the commercial interests on =
the hook for X number of articles a week. Rather than that, I think it =
would make more sense to allow for commercial attribution on articles =
sponsored by a company (read as: someone on company time wrote it). One =
possibility is to have articles sponsored by a company show up with that =
company's logo somewhere.

Finally, if there's time and interest, we could discuss creating some =
sort of commercial PostgreSQL consortium geared towards advancing =
PostgreSQL and expanding it's market share, something that would benefit =
all of us.

I think everyone here is within a US time zone; just throwing a date =
out, does Wed. 12/7 at 3-4PM CST work? Can someone arrange a call-in =
number? In the meantime feel free to add to the discussion via email.

How about 10AM CST/2PM GMT? Is that too early for the left-coasters?

As this is the first I've heard of this, would someone mind telling what
the heck it's all about, and how it ties in with the KB we're already
building on www.postgresql.org?

Well I'm in GMT, and no, I can't call in to the US while I'm at work. I
can't guarantee to talk at all outside of work hours at the moment due
to other commitments.

I think it is important that Dave also can participate in the possible
call, perhaps we could make this call on a weekend.

As this is the first I've heard of this, would someone mind telling what
the heck it's all about, and how it ties in with the KB we're already
building on www.postgresql.org?

I wasn't aware that there was an effort to create a KB at postgresql.org
(other than this one...) :(

Basically, we want to have a KB that encourages/rewards commercial
interests that contribute to it, for two reasons: commercial companies
have resources that can be thrown at populating the KB (which is
critical for it to be useful), and many (if not all) of these companies
will have their own KB's anyway, so it would be best if articles could
easily be shared.

Dave,

This is certainly the first time I've heard that anyone else was working
on a KB for PostgreSQL. Gevik has been working on his solution for a
long time; I've not seen anything on pgsql-www discussing any other
effort. Care to bring me up to date?

For the effort Jim Nasby and I are spurring, several of the PostgreSQL
corporate supporters (GreenPlum, Pervasive, EnterpriseDB, CommandPrompt,
Sun) would like to see Postgresql.org have a professional-quality KB
which makes it easy for new users and IT managers to find the
information which is currently scattered across a dozen web sites and
more mailing lists.

So this should be a joint effort, from my perspective; we don't need
*two* Postgres KBs.

Yes, Kennigres is *not* what he was working on. It's incompatible with the
rest of the web infrastructure because it's based on ASP.NET rather than the
PHP solution that had been decided upon on the www list. As far as I'm
(well, was) aware, Gevik was still working on that as he hadn't told me or
the list to the contrary.

Agreed. Which is why it seems odd that you're gathering folks elsewhere.
I'll try to bullet point my concerns:

- postgresql.org website development is discussed on
pgsql-www@postgresql.org, not a pgFoundry list. There are key members of the
web team who do not even know about this 'new' project.

- Kennigres is incompatible with our web infrastructure so cannot be used
with the current sites. Not only had we agreed that the pgdn would be part
of the main site to take advantage of the mirroring/redundancy etc. long
before that we also agreed to get rid of all the sub-sites in the long term,
not create more of them.

- Gevik has assured me that one of the things you want to discuss is whether
to use Kennigres. Does it not seem somewhat odd to do so on the projects own
list? Kinda appears that the decision has already been made.

Frankly it just seems bizarre to try to reorganise things in what seems like
such an underhand way.

So, first I would suggest moving this discussion to the www list where it
belongs. Secondly, if you're now wanting to build a standalone site,
independent of all the existing infrastructure, please let us know why you
want us to reconsider the outcomes of our previous discussions and why doing
so is a good idea so we can discuss the matter further.

Regards, Dave

Like I said, I don't recall seeing any discussion of a KB effort on the WWW
list. Can you point me to it in the archives? Possibly it happened
while I was on a trip.

The only reason for considering Kennisgres is because it's being built
independantly of organizing a KB. The more "other people's work" we can
leverage, the better.

Aha, the techdocs thread. Right. I thought you meant that there had
been a replacement effort? Because Gevik abadoned the Drupal-based
stuff.

BTW, if we're looking for replacement code for this I'm currently building
a KB for GreenPlum. Or we could look at any of the 7-8 KB projects on
Freshmeat.

Eh? You actively participated in the discussion, advocating using a CMS as
the contributor interface, and arguing against Gevik writing his own for the
job rather than using something the already existed.

In no particular order (and I probably missed a few):
http://archives.postgresql.org/pgsql-www/2005-09/msg00047.php
http://archives.postgresql.org/pgsql-www/2005-06/msg00196.php

With all due respect to Gevik, I see only vapourware on the Kennigres
project site, yet he has demo'd at least a couple of versions integrated
with our existing code on the test box at http://gevik-master.pgadmin.org/.

Regardless of the outcome of all this, EnterpriseDB just want you all to
know that we have a Google appliance that we would be willing to use to
host a knowledge base, once we all figure out what knowledge we'd like
to create ;- )

The reason I did not continue with drupal was because drupal's framework
turned out to be inflexible to extend besides of a very simple CMS that we
would end up not using it.

If that's the case then I have no objection, As you will recall from our
previous discussions on -www, the CMS can be whatever is convenient for the
contributors, provided it can produce content in a way that we can properly
integrate with the existing infrastructure.

> My goal is to help only.

Oh, please don't misunderstand, I'm not questioning anyone's motives. I'm
just concerned that decisions are being made outside of the group who should
be making those decision and in fact already did so.

BTW, I did ask you this a while back but got no reply so while I have your
ear :) - did you get a chance to finish the anti-spam stuff for the website?

In kennisgress's defence, it is just an extendable CMS system. I thought I
did not matter what technology it what built up on. Next to that, kennisgres

will have the option to export the data as static HTML to be distributed
across the servers or put into CVS for that matter, I thought this was the
major requirement for PGDN, to be able to extract content and serve it as
needed.

Of course, But I am going to develop kennisgress anyway. I absolutely do not
intent to force any application (kennisgress or anything else) to the
project. My goal is to help only.

It is finished; we only need to test it. I didn't ask anyone because, if you
remember at the time I was working on it the team was getting ready for 8.0
release.

Guys,

Actually, *I* have an objection to this: the KB needs to be *very*
searchable, which means full-text indexing, topic trees, etc. Static
HTML doesn't cut it. If it did, we could use the Bricolage server which
Marc already set up for us.

But ... I think we need to launch a full-blown discussion of functional
requirements. Which means that we should solicit for others who are
interested in working on it. And a list. Since kennisgres-pgdn is
already set up, and deleting lists from mailman is a pain, should we just
use it?

Of cource, the static HTML was only an example of the KB database export,
We could export the data into a CHM or PDF file for that matter of even bind
the data to TSearch2. As long as the backend db is postgres " :) " there is
no limitation of what one could do with the data that resides in the
database.

Sounds okay to me.

Since when was static html not full text indexable? And as far as I'm =
aware, the only reason we didn't use the Bricolage server was because =
Gevik preferred Drupal.

Anyhoo, you know my (and many others) feelings about building Yet =

need a much better reason than possibly improved indexing to change my =
mind on that one.

Actually, *I* have an objection to this: the KB needs to be *very*=20
searchable, which means full-text indexing, topic trees, etc. Static=20

Well, I think most of the discussion that needs to take place from a =
requirements standpoint (at least from a non-technical requirements =
standpoint) is around getting all the commercial interests on the same =
page. Would it be safe to assume that the community would welcome KB =
articles attributed in some way to the companies that wrote/sponsored =
them?

ISTM it will be easier to get folks from the companies on a call =
together to discuss things, so maybe it would be best to do that and =
then we can figure out what tools to use and how to make this work best =
with the community website.

So, does Dec. 7, 10-11AM CST work for the commercial interests on the =
list? This meeting should focus on what companies would want to see out =
of a shared KB.

Sure (and the time suggested is as OK with me as any other likely time).

However, I'd like to get started on discussing the functional requirements
on the mailing list. As such, I've invited other members of WWW to
participate, per Dave's request. Phone conferences are good for discusing
goals, but not for discussing technical detail.

Jim,

I'd rather not, and Dave is OK with this. WWW has enough people on it now
that no matter what you propose, two people have something negative to say
about it. It's not terribly condusive to getting stuff done on a
deadline.
