Thanks to you both, it's really good that you are so willing to help.
It's very much appreciated!

I've gone back to the original templates as suggested by At and
everything seems to work!  I can issue a cteadb command on one server
and it appears on both, and I can also dropdb and it disappears from
both.  Now, I have to bring online the load balancer :-)
