Undefined symbol error

SuSE 9.1, Postgres 8.1.2, Python 2.4.2,be_package-0.3.

I followed the install instructions in the be_package README for the exception 
and layout packages. Mention was made of a README in the  be/ subdirectory 
but I found none so I used the instructions on the web site. The backend 
compiled and installed. When I went to create the language validator/handler 
I received the following error

ERROR:  could not load library 
"/usr/local/pgsql/lib/python24-dev.so": /usr/local/pgsql/lib/python24-dev.so: 
undefined symbol: forkpty

Any  help getting past this would be appreciated.
