pg_python and password

I recently tightened down my database and set password authentication for 
local connections. When I use pg_python with the -W option or without(using 
~/.pgpass) I get an error as follows-
aklaver-2006-05-29 12:05:07.806 PDT-0LOG:  invalid password packet size
aklaver-2006-05-29 12:05:07.806 PDT-0FATAL:  password authentication failed 
for user "aklaver"
